Every time I start reading a novel, not only fantasy but also other genres, I wonder how credible it will be, how realistic and wonderful it will be at the same time. And by wonderful I mean outside the norm, because a story to be such cannot be part of the ordinary. Especially in the Fantastic, an author must be able to transform the unreal reality into a realistic dimension, so that the reader, while understanding its supernatural nature , is able to enter it without difficulty, fascinated by the new and the unknown, but certain that he is walking on solid ground.
Credibility is therefore the construction of a consistent base, which does not allow the entire story to collapse and the reader to smile at the writer's naivety. I talked about how Superman is the most incredible Phone Number Data story in existence, yet Superman works, because the author was able to create that solid ground for his readers to walk on. Thinking about how to give credibility to our stories, I believe there are four elements to consider and work on. Two are specific to the story and two are part of the writer. But all four together manage to outline a parallel world that does not appear to the reader as a dream upon awakening - so full of inconsistencies, so full of micro-realities mixed together - but as a dream he is living, therefore true, alive , real.
Creating a past that supports the present We are our history, the lived past that has matured us, disappointed us, entertained us, marked us for better or for worse. The past is therefore the basis on which our being rests. So, in the same way, the writer must create a past for the story he is about to tell. A true story must be written before it begins. As writers we must give a face to our history, engrave the same signs that the past has left on our face, on our soul, on our character. The story must start already marked to offer the reader a present that holds up.
